Experts from both the United States and several European countries were invited to cooperate with the Committee on Chemistry of Coal, National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, in preparing the various chapters. The book provides a critical examination of the world literature in the field through 1958; insofar as possible, the subsequent technical literature has also been considered. Special attention is given to present­ing and documenting both sides of controversial issues. Each chapter was reviewed by experts who were selected by consultation among members of the Committee on Chemistry of coal. References to the most important papers published since 1945 are supplied -so that the volume serves as a valuable guide to source material. The Supplementary Volume is designed to be self-contained-refer­ring to the historical development of a subject given in the l945 volumes only as background material. Two principal exceptions to this treatment of the technical subjects are the chapters on "Briquetting" and on "Law­ Temperature Carbonization"- both of which include extensive discus­sion of earlier work not adequately covered in the 1945 volumes."
