Introduction to the theory of raman effect / J. A. Koningstein
Titre : Introduction to the theory of raman effect Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. A. Koningstein Editeur : Dordrecht : D. Reidel Publishing Company Année de publication : 1972 Importance : x, 166p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-90-277-0234-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Technologies, Méthodes, Réactions Tags : MOLECULAR THEORY SPECTROSCOPY Résumé : "This book is written particularly for chemists. Being one myself, I have on several occasions tried to find a book where the theory of molecular Raman spectroscopy is treated, and not being able to find one which satisfactorily answered the questions I wanted to see answered, I decided to try to write a book on it myself. Back in the middle fifties I was shown a Raman spectrum for the first time: some faint lines on a photographic plate. In the fall of 1971, during a visit to Moscow, I vividly remembered that spectrum when the son of Mandel'shtam showed me the first spectrum taken in Russia by his father and Landsberg in 1928. The spectrum of quartz photographed during January and February of that year showed the presence of some faint new lines and in later exposures these lines became stronger and stronger." Although their book is aimed primarily at chemists, the authors hope it will also appeal to scientits in general, and indeed, to laymen with an interest of science from its cloudy beginnings to its persuasive influence in modern society. Rather than going into the formal mathematical background, the authors describe how symmetry concepts inherrited from the early Greek philosophers began to enter scientific thougts. In chemistry, the main impact has been on the development of the molecular hypothesis. Once ti became recognized that molcules were just more or less arrangements of atoms in space, symmetry concepts began to play an ever increasing role in chemical science - not only in specialist arreas such as spectroscopy, crystallography, and theoretical chemistry, but also in the everyday activities of the practical synthetic chemist. Today, chemistry teaching has adapted itselfto some extent to this situation. Chemistry students are now often inroduced to symmetry concepts at the very beginning of their sudies; older chemists may be at a disadvantage in this respect. If they feel that their encounter with symmetry concepts during their student days was inadequate, the present book may help to fill the deficit."
